Our Legacy & Who We Are

The Legacy of Theodor Billroth
Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (*April 26, 1829, Rügen, Germany; † February 6, 1894, Abbazia, Istria) was a German surgeon and a pioneer of modern abdominal and laryngeal surgery. He is considered one of the founders of scientific academic surgery worldwide.
Billroth worked as an assistant to Bernhard von Langenbeck at the Charité in Berlin before becoming Chair of Surgery in Zurich (1860) and later in Vienna (1867). He declined several prestigious offers, choosing instead to focus on his surgical innovations.
On January 29, 1881, Billroth performed the first successful distal gastrectomy for a gastric tumor, leading to the development of the Billroth I and II procedures, which remain fundamental in gastric surgery today. He also pioneered partial esophagectomy (1871) and laryngectomy (1873).
A close friend of Johannes Brahms, Billroth left a lasting impact on both medicine and culture. He was laid to rest in a grave of honor at Vienna’s Central Cemetery.
